The Best Way to Play Red Dead Redemption on PS4 in 2023
The obvious place to start is the disc version of the original release. The Game of the Year edition also includes the Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare DLC and various other add-ons. You can still pick up both versions easily via eBay or Amazon.
Xbox One owners are lucky because Red Dead Redemption is backwards compatible, meaning they can insert their old copies or download it to play right now. PS4 owners can play it, too, but it's not quite as simple, as you need a subscription to PlayStation Now.

Why can't you download a PlayStation 4 game or update when there should be enough room on the hard drive? How come your PS4 won't let you download any new PS4 games or patches? When you go to download or install a new game or patch for your PS4, sometimes it might claim you don't have enough space in system storage. However, when you check for yourself, it looks like there should be plenty of room. What's that about? How come you can't install something even though you should have enough storage? Let's go through everything in this quick guide.
If you're trying to download a game, or even just an update for a game you already have installed, your PS4 might tell you there's not enough free space in system storage. It's possible your hard drive is simply too full, and you legitimately have used up all possible room. However, sometimes that isn't the case.
Sometimes, your PS4 will refuse to complete a download, even when it looks like you should have plenty of space left on your hard drive. Why is it doing this? Well, it all ties into that lengthy copying process your PS4 goes through whenever you install a game or update. Let's use an example to explain what's happening.
Say you've just bought Red Dead Redemption 2, a game that takes up a minimum of 105GB according to PlayStation Store. Let's also say you know that your hard drive happens to have 150GB of space free, meaning you should be able to install the game with no issues. You try to set it to download, only for your PS4 to tell you there's not enough space.
The problem is that, whenever your PS4 downloads a game, it's also downloading all the updates to ensure you're getting the most recent version. This can seriously inflate the game's file size beyond what's advertised on PlayStation Store pages. Downloading a game plus any patches will require more space than it might first appear. However, that's not all.

Let's say you're trying to download a patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and your PS4 says there's not enough room, even though there should be. The reason you can't download and install the update is because of the aforementioned copying procedure. When you download an update, your PS4 then makes a second copy of the game file, adds the update, installs this new version of the game, then removes the outdated version. In other words, your PS4 needs around double the storage space for a game in order to download and update it. For example, if you have 30GB free and a 2GB patch for Call of Duty: Warzone arrives, you won't be able to download it until you make some extra room -- enough to technically install Warzone twice on your hard drive. The old version will be deleted, which frees up some space again, but you need that extra space free in the first place.
The answer, unfortunately, is to ensure you have as much hard drive storage as you can. If you have a PS4 with the standard 500GB hard drive, you'll probably find it fills up pretty quickly. In order to download and install new games, you will probably have to delete some older titles. Remove the game data for some games you don't play anymore to keep your hard drive as clutter free as possible.
For anyone who hadn't yet had the chance to play the original Red Dead Redemption or its expansion Undead Nightmare on a PlayStation console, the games have both been removed from the PS Plus lineup after six years of being on it. Gamers were made aware of the removal of Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare previously, but alongside marking their disappearance from the subscription service, it also means that the games are no longer playable on modern Sony machines.
Initially when we inserted the disc, the estimated time read as three hours total. Thankfully that sped up over time. When installing the 89.195 GB required to play Red Dead Redemption 2, disc one contained 41.631 GB of the data and took us approximately 46 minutes to install in its entirety. After putting in the second disc, the rest downloaded in what ended up being 42 minutes. So in total, it took us 1 hour and 28 minutes to install Red Dead Redemption 2 in its entirety.
In answer to this question, its probably a good thing. I am working at home today and knowing i could be playing a shiny new rockstar game would be quite a distraction. When my copy arrives, i will just get the download going in the background
Glad that I got this both digital and physical. The digital version took me 23 minutes to download and just a couple of seconds to install after that. The physical version is still in its shrink wrap.
Red Dead Redemption 2 releases Oct. 26, which means we'll be exploring the wild west on horseback in just a few short weeks. If you bought a digital version of Red Dead 2, you'll need to make sure you have enough room on your console's hard drive, and have enough time, to download the game before it officially releases.
On the Xbox side, the general consensus online is that Microsoft opens up preloading a week or two before release. This means we should be able to start downloading Red Dead 2 on our Xbox Ones any day now. According to a post from GTA Base, Gamestop seemingly revealed a preload date of Oct. 12. That's just around the corner!
You'll want to preload Red Dead Redemption 2 if you bought a digital copy, because this game is massive. The download size for RDR2 is 105GB on PS4 and 110GB on Xbox One. That could take multiple days for someone with a slow internet connection to finish downloading. Preloading allows gamers to have a copy sitting on their console's hard drive, inaccessible until it is unlocked. Once that lock has been released, players can instantly start their adventures instead of waiting for a download.
Preloading is the fastest way to play Red Dead Redemption 2. Even if you buy a physical copy at a store's midnight launch, you'll still need to get home to play. Even then, most physical games require a download of some sort to play, meaning you'll be stuck waiting for that too. And when a whole bunch of people all try to download the same thing at once? Usually there's issues.
The reason the digital installation requires more space on the PlayStation 4 is the way the file and installation systems work on that console. When the PS4 downloads a game, it needs extra space to unpack it and install it. Microsoft's file system does not require that, so the Xbox One version will only ever need 107 GB of free space before any updates or DLC.
If you're picking up Red Dead Redemption 2 later tonight like potentially millions of others around the world are, you'll then have to engage in the act of installing the game on your platform of choice only to then sit around and scream at your download bar to fill up faster. It's a tradition we've grown used to in this new console generation but I still miss the days of just popping in a disc and playing a game immediately.
Well, we got our hands on an early physical copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS4 and have been trying to figure this exact estimate out for ourselves. As was rumored last week, Red Dead Redemption 2 does indeed come on two discs which means that you're required to pop in one disc to get the first wave of data going before then removing it and finishing the download on disc 2.
It's also worth pointing out that our install took place on a PS4 Pro. We also tested out the install on a standard PS4 as well and the download times ended up being a bit faster, although they roughly were the same. The standard PS4, however, had far more storage space than that of the PS4 Pro, so this could have been an attributing factor.
There's also a day one patch to download for Red Dead Redemption 2 as well on PS4 and it comes in just a bit above 3 GB. The speed with which you download this patch will, of course, depend upon your own Internet speed, though I imagine it'll take just a bit longer to download tonight since everyone will be trying to get it all at once. Still, by the time the base game has finished installing, you should hopefully have finished downloading this day one patch as well.
While none of our own times here are firm for how long your own download of Red Dead Redemption 2 will take, this should at least give you a ballpark estimate of what to expect once you pick the game up for yourself. For those getting the game on Xbox One, apologies that we couldn't test out those install times as well.
However, you can minimize that time and download at the maximum speed your Internet connection allows by skipping WiFi. Instead, use the Ethernet port at the back of your PlayStation 4 console to connect it to your modem/router with an Ethernet cable.
Even though many gamers keep their discs so they can play titles on future-compatible platforms, companies are slowly learning about the power of backward compatibility. For instance, if you bought a PlayStation 4 game digitally, you can download it directly to your PlayStation 5. Better yet, if the game is eligible for a free PS5 upgrade, you can download the PS5 version instead.
